Cancer

Statistics

Cancer is Scotland’s biggest killer, claiming over 15,000 deaths each year.

Causes of cancer

Cancer is caused by an alteration in the growth and reproduction of the body’s cells. There are several factors that contribute to cancer; these include poor diet, heavy drinking, smoking and a lack of regular exercise.

Treating cancer

There is currently no outright cure for cancer, although most cancers are treated by means of radiotherapy or chemotherapy, which uses sophisticated technology to blast and shrink tumours. Some forms of cancer cannot be treated.

Preventing cancer

Cancer cannot be prevented but there are several ways to reduce the risk of suffering from cancer; these include refraining from smoking and drinking heavily, enjoying a healthy and well-balanced diet and enjoying regular exercise. Currently, many research projects are underway to find new treatments and cures for cancer.
