Oral health

Oral health is usually an indicator of general health; a healthy mouth usually indicates a healthy body. It is extremely important to have a good level of oral health as this will increase self-confidence and prevent you from suffering from illnesses such as tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancers.

Oral cancer

Oral cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the U.K today; it is important to visit your dentist regularly in order to reduce the chances of suffering from advanced oral cancer. Research suggests that early diagnosis can improve your chances of survival by up to 90%.

Visiting the dentist

Dentists recommend that you attend a check-up every 6 months. Visiting the dentist helps to ensure your teeth and gums are in good shape and allows dentists to monitor your general oral health and treat any existing conditions.

Brushing and Flossing

It is important to brush and floss your teeth regularly; this removes plaque and food deposits and reduces the likelihood of suffering from tooth decay and gum disease. Dentists recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes each time; flossing will help to remove any bacteria which may have been missed during brushing. Using a mouthwash freshens breath and also removes any additional bacteria.

Diet

Having a healthy diet is extremely important for maintaining good oral health. You should try to limit the amount of sugary and acidic foods you eat, as these substances damage the enamel surface of the teeth and the gums. You should try to eat and drink lots of calcium-rich foods and drinks as these help to strengthen the teeth and bones; examples of these foods include milk, cheese and yoghurts.

Physical appearance

Having a good standard of oral hygiene can contribute to attractive physical appearance and will also result in a higher level of self-confidence; those who are happy with the condition of their teeth have been proved to be more outgoing and more likely to act confidently in social situations.
